Acceptable Use and Prohibited Items
This policy sets out what you may not do on sortermarket and what may not be listed. It is written for the used textile trade specifically, so it covers contamination, waste and import restrictions that a general policy would miss.
1. Who this applies to
This policy applies to everyone using sortermarket — buyers, sellers and anyone browsing.
It forms part of our Terms of Service. Breaking it can lead to a listing being removed or an account being suspended or closed.
2. How you must behave
You must not:
- use someone else's account, or let another person use yours;
- give false information about who you are, what business you represent, or where you are trading from;
- scrape, copy or republish listings, seller details or contact information in bulk;
- try to get around security, rate limits, access controls or a plan allowance;
- upload malicious files, or try to disrupt or overload the platform;
- use the platform to send unsolicited marketing;
- use the platform for anything unlawful, or to help someone else do so.
3. Listing standards
A listing is a commercial offer that another business will act on. It must describe goods you actually hold or can genuinely supply. Specifically, you must:
- state grade, composition and origin accurately, using the grade scale for the product group;
- use your own photographs, of the actual lot being offered;
- state weight and price honestly, including any price breaks;
- keep the stated location accurate, since buyers use it to work out freight;
- not list the same lot repeatedly to occupy more space in results;
- close or remove a listing once the goods are no longer available.
4. What may not be listed
The following may not be offered on sortermarket:
- Counterfeit goods, or goods that infringe a trademark, design or copyright.
- Stolen goods, or goods you do not have the right to sell.
- Waste textiles offered as reusable or wearable grade. Material destined for disposal must not be described as a wearable lot.
- Clinical, medical or mortuary textiles.
- Textiles contaminated with bodily fluids, chemicals, mould or hazardous substances.
- Consignments known to be infested with insects, larvae or vermin.
- Protective or safety-certified equipment offered as certified where the certification cannot be evidenced.
- Items made from protected species, including furs, ivory and exotic leathers, without the permits required to trade them.
- Weapons, ammunition and military equipment.
- Goods subject to sanctions, or offered to a sanctioned person, entity or destination.
- Anything whose sale, import or export is prohibited in the seller's or the buyer's country.
This list is not exhaustive. If an item is unlawful, unsafe or misrepresented, it may be removed whether or not it appears above.
5. Condition and hygiene
State the true condition of a lot. If material is unsorted, unwashed or mixed with waste, say so in the listing rather than leaving a buyer to discover it on arrival.
Do not offer material you know to be contaminated. If contamination is discovered after a listing is published, take it down.
Used textiles can carry insects and larvae. Where a destination requires fumigation, disinfection or treatment before import, that is a matter for the buyer and seller to agree and evidence between themselves.
6. Import, export and customs
Many countries restrict, licence or prohibit the import of second-hand clothing and textiles. Requirements — permits, pre-shipment inspection, fumigation certificates, labelling — vary by destination and change without notice.
It is the buyer's and the seller's responsibility to check what applies to their shipment and to obtain whatever is required before goods move.
We do not check consignments against the rules of any destination, and we do not provide customs, sanctions or import advice. A listing being visible on sortermarket says nothing about whether it may lawfully be imported where you are.
7. Messaging
When you contact another trader:
- keep messages relevant to the lot or the trade;
- do not send unsolicited marketing or bulk messages;
- do not send abusive, threatening or discriminatory content;
- do not publish or pass on another person's personal details without their permission.
8. Reporting a problem
You can report a listing, a message or an account from the platform, or by writing to customersupport@sortermarket.com. Please say what the problem is and include anything that helps us look into it.
We review what is reported. A reported listing is retained even if it is taken down, so that the evidence is still there while the report is being looked at.
9. What we may do
Depending on what has happened, we may remove a listing, ask you to correct it, restrict what an account can do, suspend an account, or close it.
We take account of how serious the breach is and whether it has happened before. Something unsafe or unlawful can lead to immediate removal without warning.
We do not operate a formal appeals process. If you think we have got something wrong, write to customersupport@sortermarket.com and we will look at it again.
